What is a technical Illustration?
A technical illustration is a rendering (drawings, diagrams, images, designs) that combines computer graphics and art to visually communicate complex technical information. Technical illustrations form documents of varying complexity and use a diverse range of media - from printed materials to interactive screen illustrations. Parts catalogs, schematics, wiring diagrams and assembly instructions for maintenance manuals are just a few examples of technical illustrations.
Why use special software for technical illustration?
Technical illustrators need specialized tools to properly illustrate the workings of a device or machine for audiences that include engineers, technicians and/or users with no technical background. A technical illustration is flexible for adding or omitting information. Unlike a technical drawing, a technical illustration can omit elements to only include details relevant to its purpose. It can also be updated to include tools and elements that were not modelled or depicted during the construction process.
What is the difference between technical illustration and CAD software?
CAD software, such as AutoCAD®, AutoCAD LT® or VectorWorks®, is primarily meant for engineers and architects who create solid models, wire frames and wiring diagrams. Often these users run simulations and validations to compare their designs against specifications and then need to output bills for materials and manufacturing.
With respect to workflow, the engineering CAD output is for trained engineers and used to control machines for production. As a result, technical illustrators need software to convert CAD designs into easily understood graphics that can be reused throughout an organization's product life cycle.
What is the difference between technical illustration and graphic design software?
Graphics, page layout and flowcharting applications provide powerful tools for graphic designers, creative professionals and general business users. However, these applications do not offer the features required for accurate technical illustrations used in product documentation. For example, technical illustrations rely on callouts to provide additional information on specific objects, such as parts numbers, magnifying effects or text descriptions. A key requirement for technical illustrations is that halos surround callouts (and other explanatory lines in the drawing) so that they are easily readable in complex graphics. Creating halos with creative graphics applications requires 10 to 15 steps. However, with the specialized features provided by Corel DESIGNER X4, halos are created automatically with callouts and now also with other types of lines and curves.
Does Corel DESIGNER provide access to native 3D CAD files for re-purposing?

Yes. After releasing Corel DESIGNER Technical Suite X4 with Deep Exploration™ CE 5.5, the 3D import component has been updated to version 5.7.3. This not only includes several updated and enhanced 3D CAD import filters (e.g., SolidWorks 2009, CATIA V5 R19, Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 4, UG NX6, SolidEdge assembly files), but also brings significant enhancements to the workflow: Deep Exploration CE 5.7 now supports real Bezier curve and vector fill export to Corel DESIGNER X4, which results in a smaller file size but higher quality vector files. You can perform technical illustration tasks in less time while the quality of your final visual technical communication piece is improved.
