Creating an awesome skyscraper image using COOL 360

Taking photos of tall buildings at a short distance can be difficult. If you do not have special lenses for architectural photography, you need to tip the camera up to fit the entire object in the frame. Sometimes, this creates too much distortion. With PhotoImpact's COOL 360 feature, you can stitch together several shots of a building to produce a vertical panorama of its entire length.

In this tutorial, you'll learn to stitch 3 photographs to create a vertical panorama of a tall building. Before we begin, prepare your images. You can use your own photos or save these sample images to your local drive:

Remember:

  • You can only stitch photos of the same size and data type.
  • You can only stitch base images; objects cannot be stitched.
  • When stitching, PhotoImpact will detect and join similar pixels.
  • Use images that overlap each other by at least 20%.

Let us begin by opening the 3 sample images on the workspace.

To stitch a vertical panorama:

1. Select Photo: COOL 360. The COOL 360 dialog box opens with your selected photos displayed as thumbnails.

2. To arrange the photos vertically, click Stitch Options: Layout Style - Vertical. Arrange the photos in the order of how they should be joined by dragging the thumbnails in place.

You can auto-arrange according filename in alphabetical order by clicking or .

3. Click Stitch Preview to see how the finished photo will look like.

4. If you notice an obvious color differences at the stitching points, click Stitch Options again, and in Render Quality, choose Gradual. If satisfied with the result, click OK.

5. The result will open as an untitled image on the workspace. Now, use the Crop tool to remove the uneven edges and you will get a vertical panorama of your tall building viewed at a close distance.
