Eliminating block artifacts in
video
Compressed video
sometimes becomes blocky or pixelated. MPEG, for example, divides the image into
"blocks" of 8x8 pixels. Each of these pixels are compressed. Because
big amounts of data are forced to fit a limited amount of space, some pixels are
discarded. This results in blocking during decompression or playback, especially
when image sequences become too complex (as in high action scenes). In
WinDVD, you can easily eliminate or significantly reduce blocky artifacts by using
the De-block filter. You can apply De-block filter to MPEG
2, VC1, and H.264
videos. To eliminate block artifacts
in video: 1. Open WinDVD 9 and start playing your video. 2.
Click Video and select Enhancement
to open the Enhance Video Panel. In the Enhancement
tab, you can select the filters to apply. 
Note:
If the video enhancement filters are not enabled, click 
Setup to open the Setup dialog box. In the Audio/Video Setup tab, make sure that
Use Hardware Decode Acceleration is not selected. This allows WinDVD to bypass
the hardware-based noise filtering technology provided by your video card. 3.
To remove blocky artifacts from your video, select De-block. Below
are screenshots of a video before and after the De-block filter is applied.
