Corel Donates Corel® Painter™ X to Oakland Student Art Charity
Upcoming Emancipated Hearts Art Show to Feature Students’ Artwork Created in Award-Winning Painting and Illustration Software
OTTAWA - April 23, 2008
Corel Corporation (NASDAQ: CREL; TSX: CRE), a leading developer of graphics, productivity and digital media software, today announced that it has donated Corel® Painter™ X, the company’s award-winning Natural-Media® painting and illustration software, to the Emancipated Hearts art program. The software will be used by students to tell stories related to the theme, “What is Family to Me?” for an art show taking place in Oakland on Friday, May 2, 2008.
“What is Family to Me?” is an annual art showcase that explores the idea of family from the perspective of Oakland youths who are being raised in foster homes. Sponsored by the Alameda County Independent Living Skills Program, The Emancipated Hearts art show is part of the popular First Friday Art Walk which takes place each month in the art district of Oakland, California
The Emancipated Hearts program began in March 2007 when founder and curator Ross Todd Kerr led a writers’ workshop for high school seniors who had grown up in foster care and participated in the Alameda County Independent Living Skills Program. The program was conceived to provide students with an opportunity to broaden their experience of the community and to share their life experiences through the visual medium, while developing valuable life and career skills.
“We are very pleased to receive Corel’s donation because it will provide our students with a powerful way to express themselves artistically and receive positive recognition for their efforts,” said Kerr. “Emancipated Hearts provides students in foster care with much needed extra support during pivotal years and we rely on the charitable support of companies like Corel who take an active interest in building stronger communities by helping people express themselves in positive ways. ”
“Corel is proud to partner with the Emancipated Hearts program because we believe that creating art is a powerful route to self expression and a wonderful way to build confidence, particularly among young people, ” said Rob MacDonald, Product Manager, Corel Painter. “Corel’s employees are passionate about giving back to our communities and the Corel Painter team is honored to help students tap into their unique vision by providing the tools that help them to tell their stories and share their ideas in a creative way. We are looking forward to seeing how the students use Corel Painter X to answer the question “What is Family to Me?”
