Painter Master Nick Anderson wins the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning
by Cher Threinen-Pendarvis
Nick Anderson is the chief editorial cartoonist at the Louisville Courier-Journal in Louisville, Kentucky, and his work has been published in the New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, and the Chicago Tribune.
This week Nick was honored to win the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning for his portfolio of 20 cartoons that were created using Painter.
When he heard the news that he had won, Nick was using Painter's Digital Watercolor brushes to paint flesh-toned washes on the faces of the characters in his Tuesday cartoon. Nick knew that the Pulitzers would be announced that day, but he had decided to check the results later. When his editor David Hawpe told him that he had won, Nick was extremely excited to have won such an honor. Within a few minutes, the newspapers and several television stations were calling the Courier-Journal asking to interview him.
Nick credits Painter for allowing him to freely express his personal vision. "Painter has reinvigorated my drawing style," says Nick. "Painter is as expressive as conventional media- but it's better- because it has the "undo" command."
Anderson begins each cartoon by drawing a conventional black and white drawing with pen and ink on bristol board. After completing a drawing, he scans it and then uses a variety of Painter brushes to add color and texture.
