We also help you save money using XML—and perhaps earn a few dollars using Corel Painter 8™. There are other tips and tricks in store, plus events you can attend to learn more. Read on!

How to Convert Shadows and Set Shadow Resolution

By Steve Bain

One of the most popular effects in the CorelDRAW arsenal is the Interactive Drop Shadow Tool. It enables designers and illustrators to instantly apply the soft, beautiful shadow effects seen in professional-caliber layouts and drawings. The fact that drop-shadow effects are based on bitmap characteristics, however, raises two important questions:
What color model is the shadow based on?
What resolution is the bitmap representing the shadow effect?

Get the answers from Steve.

Retreat, Paint—and Perhaps Profit

The Artistry Corel Painter 8 Beginners Retreats
Various venues
Southern California
November 8 and 9, 2003

Portrait photographers are earning healthy sums through the creation of 'Paintered' portraits. If you're wondering why your Paintered photos continue to look like, well, photos with brush strokes, the Artistry Corel Painter 8 Beginners Retreats are for you. The retreats provide not only immensely helpful information on using Painter 8, but also valuable lessons on basic art theory, such as the concepts that distinguish paintings from photos. Hosting the retreats is artist and author Karen Sperling, who wrote the first Painter manual—12 years ago—as well as the Painter Complete series of books. Providing expert instruction, Karen shows digital artists how to turn portraits and landscapes into true paintings—and she demonstrates for traditional artists how to apply Painter techniques to a pencil and ink sketch, a watercolor wash, or a grisaille. The lessons are also helpful for generating technical drawings—architects' CAD renderings, for example, that call for a painted rather than photographic look.

To register and find out places and times, visit www.artistrymag.com/docs/classes.html. Or contact Karen Sperling directly at ks@artistrymag.com or ksperling@aol.com. Don't delay: register by October 24th to take advantage of the special early-bird special fee.

You can also take courses from Painter 8 guru Jeremy Sutton. He offers the following:

Painter Panache Master Series Class: Capturing the Soul Ramada Plaza Hotel

Quick Tips for WordPerfect

Using Document Map
Did you know about the (aptly named) Document Map feature, new in WordPerfect® 11? A perfect complement to the Table of Contents and Index features, Document Map essentially builds a roadmap of your document using the table of contents, table of authorities, and index markers—allowing you to navigate the document quickly and easily by clicking entries in the 'map'. There's no easier way to move through long, complex documents.

Here's how it works. To display the document map:
  1. Open a document that contains markers for a table of contents, table of authorities, or index.
  2. Select View, Document Map (Alt+Shift+M) to display the document map. By clicking a marker in the list, you'll jump to that particular part of the document.
  3. To display only specific entries—only the table of contents, for example—select a marker type from the Reference Markers list box.
  4. If you prefer a tree view, click the Turn On Tree View button.
  5. As you edit the document and make changes to the reference markers, update the changes by clicking the Refresh the Document Map button.
