 Big News from Corel!

Corel and Microsoft Announce Strategic Alliance

On Oct. 2, Corel and Microsoft announced that they have formed a strategic alliance that will see the two companies expand their relationship to encompass projects related to Microsoft's new .NET initiative. As part of this expanded relationship, Microsoft has


purchased 24 million non-voting convertible preferred shares at a purchase price of U.S.$5.625 per share or a total purchase price of U.S. $135 million. For more information on this exciting news, please consult the Press Release.


Derek J. Burney Appointed Corel President and CEO

Corel is pleased to announce that Derek J. Burney has been appointed to the positions of president and CEO on a permanent basis. He has also been appointed to Corel's board of directors. In addition, Corel is announcing the appointment of four executive vice-presidents, each in charge of key portfolios within the company's new organizational structure.  What's New With WordPerfect®

WordPerfect® Office 2000 Service Pack 4 is Now Available

Corel is very pleased to announce the release of WordPerfect® Office 2000 Service Pack 4. This latest Service Pack updates WordPerfect Office 2000 Standard, Voice-Powered and Professional editions, and is designed to meet the needs of a few particular groups...

If you have a disability or a special need such as a visual, hearing, movement or cognitive impairment, Service Pack 4 addresses many of the accessibility issues you may have encountered in the past. Service Pack 4 also offers a valuable update to those using either Windows® 2000 or Windows® Terminal Server with WordPerfect Office 2000.
If you are using a Document Management System to manage your files, Service Pack 4 offers improved integration with ODMA and increased compatibility with industry-leading Document Management Systems.

Due to the extent of the changes included in this update, Service Pack 4 is not available as a download. However, you can order a copy from Corel Customer Service for just US $9.95 (for shipping & handling).

Development on the Next Full Release of WordPerfect® Underway

For those of you wondering about Corel's future development plans for the WordPerfect suite of applications, here's a quote straight from the source:

Changing text to uppercase in WordPerfect 9:

In WordPerfect 9, you can change lowercase text to uppercase. This feature lets you change the case of text without having to retype it.

To change text to uppercase:

1. Select the text
2. Click Edit, Convert Case, Uppercase

The release of the biggest CorelDRAW upgrade ever is just over a month away! This intensive, three-day training camp is aimed at students wanting to learn intermediate and advanced features of CorelDRAW 9 and Corel PHOTO-PAINT 9. An introductory knowledge of CorelDRAW is required, with limited or no knowledge of Corel PHOTO-PAINT. The camp will be led by Corel Certified Instructor Tom Anzai,
who will be assisted by a Corel Training Specialist.  At least 75% of the course will be hands-on, and each participant will receive Corel-approved CorelDRAW 9 Advanced and Corel PHOTO-PAINT 9 courseware, published by Anzai! Inc. Seating is limited to 24 people, so be sure to sign up soon!

Arranging palettes in Corel® Painter™ 6

In Corel Painter 6, you can arrange palettes in a convenient way and then save the layout.

To arrange palettes:

1. Arrange the palettes however you want
2. Choose Window menu, Arrange Palettes, Save Layout
3. Enter a name for the new palette layout and click OK

Restricting data in Quattro® Pro 9 for Linux®:

In Quattro Pro 9 for Linux, you can restrict data in a notebook. This feature lets you set restrictions for data so that certain data is interpreted as either a label or a date. For example, Quattro Pro will read a phone number as a formula unless you set it as a label.

To restrict cells:

1. Select the cells
2. Click Format, Selection
3. Click the Constraints tab
4. Enable one of the following buttons:

  • General – to accept both labels and dates
  • Labels Only – to accept only labels
  • Dates Only – to accept only dates
