“I can’t draw a stick figure,” Kevin Parnell of Middleburg Heights, OH, said emphatically. “But when the Art Media tools came out, I thought ‘maybe a guy like me can do some art.’ I found I could create the kind of art I saw in my head and make it happen.” Parnell’s talent has not gone unnoticed. “I have one friend who keeps nagging me to sell this stuff,” he said of his nature-inspired work. Parnell has created a Web site but said, “I mostly do it for relaxation and fun.”
Relaxation is important for Parnell, who after years as a Manager at McDonald’s, retired when doctors discovered he had an enlarged heart condition. Parnell is under doctor’s orders to “take it easy,” which means lots of time for art. A long-time photographer, Parnell began transforming his photographs into painterly works of art when Art Media tools were added in Version 9. “I didn’t really get interested until those tools came out. I got a graphic tablet, which helps a lot, and started teaching myself the program.”

Parnell said he found his way around the program fairly quickly. “The Paint Shop Pro program fits how I work,” Parnell said. “It’s easier to get [the piece] to be how I see it in my head. I’ve tried other stuff but I just don’t get the look I’m after.”
While working in Paint Shop Pro, Parnell has developed a style that incorporates both the Art Media tools and Virtual Painter. A lot of the work, like Pine Cone, is a result of this combination. “For Pine Cone, I did the detail stuff using the Pencil Tool then I used Virtual Painter and merged and blended the effects,” he said. This innovative use of the two programs gives him interesting effects and endless possibilities.
In addition to the Pencil Tool, Parnell finds himself using the Chalk and Pastel Tools a lot. “I don’t use the oil brush too much,” he said, preferring instead the effect he gets with Virtual Painter.
Parnell finds inspiration all around him. “We have really nice parks here,” he said. He chooses his subjects from the wide variety of natural scenes around him. And though he continues to need to take it easy, the living, and the artwork, is easier with Paint Shop Pro.
