Converting Dolby 2-channel audio to 5.1-channel surround sound

If you have DVD movies that weren‘t mastered for Dolby Digital 5.1 or music CDs in 2-channel stereo, you can up-convert them to 5.1-channel surround sound through the Dolby® Pro Logic® IIx feature.

Dolby® Pro Logic® IIx is an audio expansion technology that delivers a clever surround effect from any two-channel (stereo) sound source.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to easily convert your 2-channel stereo source to surround sound 5.1-channel.

To convert Dolby 2-channel audio to 5.1-channel surround sound:

1. Open WinDVD 9 and start playing your 2-channel stereo movie or audio CD.

2. Click Audio and select Playback Device to open the Enhance Audio Panel. In the Playback Device tab, you can select your audio output device, specify the audio technology, and adjust the speaker gains.

3. In Device Selection, select 6 speakers.

Note: The Dolby® Pro Logic® IIx option is available if 4 speakers to 8 speakers is selected.

4. In Technology, select Dolby ProLogic IIx.

5. Select Movie or Music as your listening mode.

6. Dimension creates a sense of front to back soundstage depth. Use the sliders to adjust the depth of your soundfield.

7. Adjust the Center Width slider to control how the center channel sound mixes into the left and right fronts.

8. Select Panorama to creates a wraparound surround effect.

Try experimenting with these controls until you achieve your desired sound quality. The ideal settings will of course depend on your audio content.
